Abstract

The capital of Yemen, Sana'a, faces planning, urban, and environmental challenges that threaten the sustainability of life and urban environment. This study addresses the problem of urban planning and discusses the definition of the concepts of planning, urban planning, and the direction of the urban issue existing in Sana'a. It focuses on the multiple aspects of the urban issue in all its planning, service, and environmental dimensions. The study also addresses factors causing the urban planning issue at the national level, including the decline in urban planning level, absence of guidance plans, delay in detailed urban land-use plans, violations of existing plans, urban growth in suburbs without planning, and growth of slums around the capital. The study concludes with procedural, planning, and developmental solutions to prepare the capital for population increases and sustain environmental and urban life in Yemen’s capital.
