Morocco underwent a colonial experience that differed greatly from that of some countries, including Algeria, mainly because Morocco was occupied by France and Spain. This foreign occupation was confronted with strong resistance by the Moroccan Liberation Army, of which the Sahrawi resistance elements are an integral part given the Sahrawi’s relationship with the Sultans and Kings of Morocco. This relationship has been sustained by a pledge of allegiance (bai'a) and material and moral support. When the French Protectorate was put an end to, this resistance continued i until the departure of Spain, which refused to quit the southern Moroccan regions, at the time of the French withdrawal. It should be noted that the "Polisario" front that calls for secession is but the product of the neighboring countries to Morocco, and which are countries that have interests in the region.
